What Does Black Mold Look Like?

Black mold (Stachybotrys chartarum) is greenish-black, often slimy when wet, and powdery when dry. It typically grows on chronically wet drywall, wood, and ceiling tiles.

Appearance

Dark green to black, often with a wet or shiny look that becomes powdery when dry.

Where It Grows

On materials wet for at least 7+ days — usually drywall paper, OSB, or ceiling tiles.

Lookalikes

Many harmless molds also appear dark. Only lab analysis can confirm Stachybotrys.

What to Do

Don't disturb suspect growth. Contain the area and contact a professional inspector.
